130 million y ears ago South America and Africa were just beginning to move apart in the break-up of a giant southern super-continent known to geologists as Gondwanaland. At this time the Andes Mountains had not even begun to form. Many of the species we know on Earth today had not evolved and great dinosaurs roamed plains studded with tall trees bearing branching stems. These curious trees which had small leaves were the ancestors of present-Day pines.
