Overview Sucre

Sucre is the constitutional capital of the Republic of Bolivia. It is located towards the south of the country, at about 2,750 meters above the sea level. It has a very moderate climate, which is typical of the Andes. Sucre is known as the “White City”, mostly because of its unique architectural beauty and white houses, this is the reason why this town has been declared one of Mankind’s Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, aside from being considered the capital city of the country, Sucre used to be the seating place of the government. Such duty would then be transferred to the city of La Paz. Currently, it is the place where the Supreme Court of Justice presides over the nation. In this city there is also one of the oldest and most prestigious universities of America, the University of San Francisco Xavier.

Sucre is the Capital of the Department of Chuquisaca- just like Potosi, has been declared an “Asset of Humankind”. Founded in 1538 and it was originally named the city of La Plata (Silver City), and it was the capital of the High Court of Justice of Charcas. Short after that, it acquired its new name Chuquisaca and in the year 1825 –when the republic was founded- it was finally given the name of Sucre, in honor to the “Mariscal” (Field Marshal) Antonio Jose de Sucre, who was a member and head of the liberation army and the second president of Bolivia.

The traditional constructions located in the center of the city are painted in white, and it is also the reason why this most beautiful town is known as “The White City”.

There is also an extensive zone filled with dinosaur tracks which have been found on the outskirts of the city. Tarabuco is another attractive site, famous for its traditional festivities, where hundred of local residents dance dressed on colorful outfits manufactured by themselves.
