


This Department is located in the Eastern region of the country. It has a total surface of 320.000 km2, a third of which is mostly mountains, the rest of it is a beautiful and exuberant natural paradise filled with large extensions of jungle and breathtaking prairies, all of which extends all across the Amazon plateau.
Towards the North there is the Department of Beni and the Republic of Brazil; towards the South there is the Department of Chuquisaca and the Republic of Paraguay; towards the East there is the Republic of Brazil and towards the West there are the Departments of Beni, Cochabamba and Chuquisaca. It has a total extension of 370,621 kms.2 and a total population of 2.029.471 inhabitants (2001 Census). The capital of the department is the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra (437 meters above the sea level). It is located at 17° 47' 20" South latitude and 63°10' 30" West longitude from the Greenwich Meridian. This Department is divided into 15 provinces and 150 cantons
