The Department of Potosi is located on the Southwest portion of Bolivia. To the North there are the Departments of Oruro and Cochabamba; towards the South there is the Republic of Argentina; towards the East there are the Departments of Chuquisaca and Tarija and towards the West there is the Republic of Chile.

It has a total extension of 118.218 Km2. and a total population of 709.013 inhabitants (2001 Census). The capital of the Department is the City of Potosi (4.070 meters above the sea level), located at 16°30'30" South Latitude and 68°112'00" West Longitude from the Greenwich Meridian. The Department of Potosi has 16 provinces and 301 cantons.
