The Department of Oruro is located towards the west of Bolivia. Towards the North there is the Department of La Paz; towards the South there is the Department of Potosi; towards the East there are the Departments of Cochabamba and Potosi and Towards the West the Republic of Chile. It has a total extension of 53,558 km2 and a total population of 391.870 inhabitants (2001 Census). The capital of the department is the city of Oruro (3,706 meters above the sea level), located between 17° 58' South latitude and 67°6' West longitude from the Greenwich Meridian. The department of Oruro has 16 provinces and 119 cantons
